The programme provides a research-based context for artists to define live art and contemporary performance through individual and collective practice. The emphasis of the programme is on practice-oriented theoretical enquiry. Students are committed to full-time study.\r\n\r\n\r\nIn the LAPS MA programme, the approach to live art and contemporary performance is to see them as disciplines of contemporary art. LAPS invites artists from diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds to explore their ideas and emerging narratives in the arts. Practice and research are seen as forms of shared and collaborative inquiry between students and staff, including the wider context of contemporary art practices and the communities involved.\r\n\r\n\r\nMA students are seen as practitioners and are encouraged to explore new forms and expressions of live art and contemporary performance through practice and research. Students are encouraged to develop their critical positions as social, political and economic agents in society.\r\n\r\n\r\n**Degree structure and content**\r\n\r\n\r\nThe structure of the programme is based equally on performance and research practice. The Contemporary Performance Practice module provides ample time for individual practice through workshops. The Research Practice module provides tools for individual research practice in artistic research, performance studies, performance history and art theories. The Performance and Society module engages performance practice in various communities. Exploring Performance promotes the opportunity to collaborate with other MA students, and the Thematic Focus module reflects on selected current debates on issues of visibility, material cultures, performance philosophy, economics or activism. In the Master's Thesis Project, students present their choice of formal, aesthetic, material and socio-political questions. In addition, students will complete a minimum of 10 credits of optional studies.\r\n\r\n\r\n**Mode of studying**\r\n\r\nContemporary performance practice and research have social, political, aesthetic and economic roots, as well as an societal influence. The concept of contemporary performance in the LAPS programme rests on four pillars: individual artistic practice, theoretical rigour, collaborative ethos and the critical role of art in society. Through contemporary art practice, individuals and collectives find themselves in dialogue, but also in contradictory conditions.
